No. Individual driving data will not impact your rates with Amica or any other insurance carrier.
Who is Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT)?
Founded in 2010 by two Massachusetts Institute of Technology professors and experienced entrepreneurs, CMT makes roads and drivers safer around the world with its innovative, telematics-based mobile app. CMT is based in Boston, Massachusetts. To learn more about CMT, please visit www.cmtelematics.com.
What kind of data is collected and how will it be used and protected?
Amica will receive only anonymized driving data. Data sent to Amica will not identify an individual. During signup, a participant will be asked to create a username (to be shown on leaderboards) and provide their email address (to notify winners or to reset passwords if obtaining a new smartphone during the competition). All data collected at the time of registration will be used to power the contest and prizes.
Your driving scores for speed, acceleration, braking, cornering and phone usage are measured using the following data sources:
o Location, speed and heading
o Accelerometer data
o Gyroscope data
o Magnetometer data
o Barometer data
o Information about use of app
Using mobile telematics, the application calculates driving performance in five key areas:
After each trip, the driver will receive a score and feedback on any unsafe driving behavior. Participants will also have an opportunity to earn achievement badges.
Who appears on the leaderboard?
Anyone with a smartphone that downloads the app and registers to participate will appear on the leaderboard. Not all participants in the contest are eligible to win a prize, as there are eligibility requirements. Therefore, the leaderboard may not necessarily reflect the potential winners. Official Rules and eligibility requirements can be found at RISafestDriver.com.
Which phones are compatible with the app?
iPhones running Apple iOS 8 or higher and Android smartphones running Google Android 4.4 or higher.
The following phones are not compatible with the app:
Samsung Galaxy Note II, BLU Life One XL, HTC One Max VZW, HTC M8, HTC One M8 Eye, Huawei P7, Huawei P7 mini, Huawei Ascend P7 and Moto G (third generation).
Additionally, please note that in order for the device to run the RI Safest Driver app, your phone must have a gyroscope.
Do I need to actively open and run the app while driving?
No. The app runs in the background of your smartphone and records trips automatically once it detects you are in motion.
Will this app distract me while I am driving?
No. Once the app is installed, it will automatically run in the background. The app can detect distracted driving based on smartphone movement.
How is the safest driver score calculated?
Skill-based points will be determined by the app based on individual driving skills as determined by exclusive CMT methodology. The methodology monitors the frequency and acceleration intensity, braking intensity and frequency, and average speed of the vehicle in relation to posted speed limits, along with interaction time with phone while vehicle is moving. Participants will receive a rating between 1 and 5 (5 being the highest) and suggestive correction action (if applicable) after each trip in each of the following categories: braking, acceleration, cornering, speeding and distraction. A 5-star rated trip means the participant scored highly in all categories. A user will receive a driving score after one (1) trip has been completed. At the conclusion of each entry period, the driving score is calculated (highest score possible is 100).
Is an internet connection required to run the Rhode Island's Safest Driver app?
An internet connection is not required to record a drive. It is required in order to upload the drive to CMT servers to be processed and scored, and it is required in order for the app to download new scored trips.
If I shut my phone off, will the app still capture the trip data?
No. Phone apps cannot run if the phone is powered off. However, turning the screen off is fine.
When the contest is over, can I still use the app?
Yes. The app will be available to use until April 27, 2019. However, the contest ends April 7, 2019.
How does the app know whether I’m a driver or passenger?
The app learns your driving behaviors over time including your common routes. You can review and correct your trip classification from driver to passenger or vice versa, which helps the app’s algorithms become more accurate.
How do I label my status on a given trip, like Driver or Passenger?
To label your status, open the app and navigate to the trip’s screen. Tap the Steering Wheel Icon in the upper right corner. You will see a series of options to select the correct mode.
